The Motherpluckers

Hot, wet summers mean that the vines grow, and quick! In the summer months, especially December through March, it can be a massive challenge to keep on top of the canopies and all the leaves.

Canopy management is a really important part of the grape growing process, as a canopy that isn’t managed can create a damp micro-climate that might end up damaging the fruit.

So throughout the summer, we are leaf plucking along the fruit line, to make sure that there is airflow through the fruit, keeping the moisture at bay.

Then, like most things on planet earth, the vines are trying to take over the world. So they grow, and grow fast, and the second challenge is managing the height of the vines.

And, with 4,000 vines, that’s a tonne of work. It’s where the Motherpluckers come in and help (save us).

They are just an amazing group of friends that give up a few hours on a Saturday to help pluck those leaves or trim the growing vines. The reward, of course, is wine and food. And a sought after vintage Motherplucker t-shirt!

If you fancy coming into the vineyard and becoming a Motherplucker, then get in touch, we very often need all the help we can get!
